History...
Twin County United Way is a nonprofit organization formed in 1957 by a group of Galax businessmen who sought to better their community by raising funds to provide needed health and human care services through an annual area-wide appeal. It was first called the United Fund of Galax, but was later expanded to include the counties of Carroll and Grayson and became known as Twin County United Way.
In 1980 the goal was only $40,000, but within the years following, the volunteer efforts of the organization have reached goals in excess of a quarter of a million dollars.
The tremendous growth is attributed to the community services to which this organization has been committed since 1980. Twin County United Way not only raises funds for more than 28 nonprofit health and human care organizations in Carroll & Grayson Counties and the City of Galax, but also provides other worthwhile services. They provide Information and Referral services; convene a local FEMA board for emergency food and shelter purposes; provide a Gifts in Kind program; provide management and other assistance to area nonprofits; conduct the Combined Virginia Campaign for state employees; and aid the community as a problem solver. They do this with a paid staff of two people and dozens of volunteers.
Twin County United Way is a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service which allows the agency to solicit and collect tax deductible donations.
The organization of Twin County United Way is local and autonomous. It is governed by a volunteer local board of directors who are dedicated and concerned with local needs.
Twin County United Way is a member of the United Way of America, the national trade association. Being a member in good standing means that that Twin County United Way and our local community can benefit from the national advertising (including NFL and ACC promotions), training, resources and supplies.
